Marquette Drop 4-3 Decision At Xavier

April 8, 2017

The Marquette University men’s tennis team (13-5) dropped a 4-3 decision at Xavier (6-11) Saturday afternoon in a matchup between BIG EAST Conference opponents.

The loss snapped an eight-match winning streak for the Golden Eagles, who last dropped a match on March 3 at Wisconsin.

The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles point, earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Xavier, however, took control in singles play to secure the team victory. Sophomore Alvaro Verdu, who clinched MU’s win in last weekend’s win at Creighton, was unable to repeat his performance in a narrow 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 loss to XU’s Matt Bishop.

Freshmen Luke Smrek (No. 2) and Brett Meyers (No. 6) were the only Marquette players able to earn wins on Saturday.

MU returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Butler.
