April 9, 2011

The Marquette University men’s tennis team (12-9) continued its four-match homestand Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Detroit (6-12) Saturday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles are now 7-1 on the year at home and will face Green Bay (11-5) Sunday at 1 p.m. CT as the regular season winds down.

Junior Drake Kakar staked Marquette to a 2-0 lead with a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 spot. Teammates Logon Collins and Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley followed with straight-set victories of their own to clinch the team victory for the Golden Eagles.

Also claiming singles wins for MU were sophomore Otavio Perim and freshman Thibault Troude. Troude rallied after dropping the first set and eventually claimed the tiebreaker victory.

Marquette opened the match by sweeping all three doubles contests to claim the valuable 1-0 advantage. MU captured quick 8-1 decisions at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively, and held on for an 8-7 win at the No. 1 spot by junior Jonathan Schwerin and senior Jose Manuel Munoz.
