Marquette Downs Butler 7-0 In Home Finale
April 13, 2018
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (14-5) capped the home portion of its regular season with a 7-0 victory over Butler (13-5) Friday evening at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Friday’s contest was a re-match of the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament title matchup, which the Bulldogs rallied to win 4-3. MU has advanced to the title match in each of the last three campaigns.
The victory allowed Marquette to finish the season a perfect 11-0 at home.
Prior to the match the Golden Eagles recognized the program’s lone senior, Scott Christian. A two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, Christian earned the program’s Coaches Attitude Award as a sophomore. He has accounted for eight doubles victories in dual competition in 2017-18 and has already surpassed his career doubles win total entering the season.
The Lake Forest, Illinois, native capped the home portion of his MU career in dramatic fashion. Serving and trailing 0-40 with the match tied 5-5, Christian and sophomore Luke Smrek scored four-straight points to move ahead 6-5. The duo worked quickly through the deciding game and Christian’s forehand winner clinched the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
Marquette posted a trio of straight-set wins to clinch the team victory. Junior Greg Anderson earned the win with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 4. Also claiming singles decision for MU were Luke Smrek, Brett Meyers, Eddie Griesedieck, Alvaro Verdu and Luis Heredia Gomez
The Golden Eagles conclude the regular season at rival DePaul on Saturday, April 21. First serve is set for 3:15 p.m. CT.
