Marquette Caps Regular Season With 4-3 Win Over DePaul
April 14, 2012
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (10-12) wrapped up the 2011-12 regular season with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over DePaul (11-14) at Lakeshore Sports and Fitness Saturday evening.
The victory snapped a six-match losing skid to the Blue Demons for the Golden Eagles, including two setbacks in 2010-11.
Marquette opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. The Golden Eagles posted identical 9-8 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, with the MU tandem of Vukasin Teofanovic and Drake Kakar clinching the point with a win over DePaul’s Mathias Hambach and Sven Kasper.
MU moved ahead 2-0 after a 6-4, 6-4 win by senior Jonathan Schwerin at the No. 4 position. Kakar did the same at No. 6 and after three singles wins by the Blue Demons, the match came down to the No. 3 spot for the team victory.
“Our seniors played really well today and were key to the victory,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “It’s a perfect result for us as we get ready for the league tournament.”
Trailing 5-4 in the second, Logon Collins held off DePaul’s Casper by winning the next three games, including an ace to end the match in the final game. The sophomore claimed the first set 7-5 as well.
“Logon was rock solid today,” Rodecap said. “I don’t think his serve was broke all match long and he was able to take the momentum gained in the doubles victory into singles play.”
The Golden Eagles will next compete in the BIG EAST Conference Championship April 19-22 in Tampa, Fla. MU will find out its first round opponent when the team rankings are determined by the league office Monday afternoon.
