MU Wraps Up Regular Season With 5-2 Loss To No. 61 DePaul

The Marquette University men’s tennis team (13-10) wrapped up the regular season portion of its 2010-11 campaign with a 5-2 loss to league rival DePaul (15-8) Saturday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The No. 61 Blue Demons were able to claim the valuable doubles point and never trailed in the match. Marquette concludes the year 8-2 at home with the loss. The Marquette duo of freshman Dan Mamalat and sophomore Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley was able to hold on for an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot and after a DePaul victory at the No. 3 position, the doubles point came down to the top spot. The Blue Demons were able to hold off MU’s Jonathan Schwerin and Jose Manuel Munoz for an 8-6 victory, which allowed DePaul to claim two of the three outings.
Trailing 2-0, Mamalat got Marquette on the board with a straight-set 7-5, 6-4 victory over DePaul’s George Chanturia at the No. 2 position. Also claiming a singles win for the Golden Eagles was Gutierrez Crowley, who rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 over Sven Kasper of DePaul at the No. 1 spot.
Marquette will wrap up its season at the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Notre Dame April 28-May 1. The tourney champion earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Seeding will be determined for the conference event on April 25.
