The Marquette University men’s tennis team (11-9) held off BIG EAST Conference opponent Butler (9-10) 5-2 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

With the victory, Marquette finished a perfect 8-0 at home in 2015-16 dual competition.

The Golden Eagles honored seniors Daniel Fernandez and Gleb Sklyr prior to the match. Fernandez, whose mother, Graciela, was in attendance to watch him play for the first time at Marquette, was an All-BIG EAST Conference selection last season. Sklyr is the lone four-year player on the roster and owns over 60 combined singles and doubles victories for MU.

Marquette opened the match by claiming the doubles point, earning wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. After a quick win at No. 2 by freshmen Greg Anderson and Alvaro Verdu, juniors Kristiyan Trukov and Mackenzie Stearns clinched the point with a 6-1 decision of their own at No. 3.

After Butler tied the score at 1-1 with a win by Mason Dragos at No. 1, Stearns pushed MU ahead 2-1 courtesy of a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 spot. Verdu, who trailed 5-0 in his first set, rallied for a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 decision at No. 2 and is now 11-3 on the year at that position in dual action.

The Bulldogs against pulled within one at 3-2, but sophomore Andre Romanello was able to secure the team victory with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6. He saw his opponent from Butler pull ahead 4-3 in the third set after winning three-straight games, but that would be all he would allow the rest of the match. Anderson capped the afternoon with a three-set win at No. 5 singles.

The Golden Eagles will conclude the regular season at rival DePaul at 2:15 p.m. CT on April 23.
