Marquette Men's & Women's Tennis Teams Fall At BIG EAST Championship
April 17, 2009
Tampa - The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams opened play at their respective 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championship with a pair of tough losses in the quarterfinals.
The men's squad, which owned the No. 4 seed in the nine-team field, dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 5 seed DePaul. The women's team, which also claimed the fourth seed, fell 4-1 at the hands of fifth-seeded Rutgers.
The Marquette men will face No. 8 seed Villanova at Noon on Saturday, while the women will take on No. 7 seed Syracuse at 9 a.m. ET. Each squad must win its remaining two matches to claim fifth place at the 2009 championship.
The men's team claimed the doubles point against the Blue Demons and moved ahead 2-0 following junior Dusan Medan's 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 2 singles position. The Golden Eagles led 3-2 after senior Trent Hagan downed DePaul's Austin Doerner at No. 1.
The Blue Demons collected wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles, however, to rally for the victory. Junior Niko Boulieris forced a third set in his matchup with Alasdair Graetz at No. 3, but wasn't able to complete the comeback in the match-deciding contest.
The women's team dropped the doubles point in its matchup with Rutgers and wasn't ever able to gain any momentum in singles play. MU's tandem of Rachael and Gillian Hush was the victim of a Scarlet Knight rally at No. 3 doubles, with the 9-7 decision sealing the doubles point for RU.
Senior Robin Metzler was the lone Golden Eagle to claim a singles victory, downing Morgan Ivey 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. Rutgers claimed three singles wins in the middle of the lineup to secure the team victory.
