Men's Tennis Falls to Louisville at BIG EAST Championships
April 22, 2006
TAMPA, Fl. - The Marquette men's tennis team fell to the Louisville Cardinals, 4-0, in today's semi-final match up at the BIG EAST Championships on the campus of the University of South Florida. The loss snaps the Golden Eagles six match win streak and drops their record to 16-9 on the dual match season, 5-2 in the BIG EAST. Louisville clenched the early point, as Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustafsson took down Eigis Vedrickas and Ian Kawas at no.1, 8-4. Slavko Rodman and Tony Tuefel defeated Marquette's Trent Hagan and Stephen Shao, 8-6, at no. 3. "We certainly didn't play our best tennis today," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "A lot of that credit goes to Louisville. You could see in the match they had more experience on the court then we did and had a lot of seniors on their roster. Louisville is a good team and have been ranked for most of the season." The bottom half of the Cardinal's singles line up secured the win. At no. 4, Jeremy Clark defeated Shao, 6-1, 6-1. Johnny Berrido was able to earn the fourth and deciding point in Louisville's win by beating Brett Binkley at no. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Marquette will play for third place tomorrow against the University of South Florida at noon. The Golden Eagles beat USF, 4-3, just one week earlier. "Our guys are looking forward to playing tomorrow," Rodecap said. "It will be Eigis and Ian's last match as Marquette athletes. We will be playing hard for them. It will be another tough match and we'll have to be at our best to beat them."
