MU Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker To DePaul In BIG EAST Tourney

The Marquette University men’s tennis team opened play at the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championship with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to DePaul Friday afternoon at the Leeper Park Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles are seeded fourth in the nine-team field, while the Blue Demons earned the No. 5 seed in the event, which is being hosted along with the women’s tourney by Notre Dame. The first team to collect four points advances in the bracket and any remaining matches still on court are suspended.
The loss was the second in less than a week for MU against DePaul. The team also fell 4-3 to the Blue Demons on April 17 in Chicago, Ill.
Senior Dusan Medan and freshman Otavio Perim collected straight-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, respectively, but MU was unable to secure the clinching fourth point. The match came down to No. 6 singles, where DPU’s Doug Perrin was able to rally for a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 victory over MU’s Jonathan Schwerin.
MU opened the match by claiming a hard-fought doubles point. The Golden Eagle duo of Mark Rutherford/Jonathan Schwerin claimed an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot and the tandem of freshmen Otavio Perim and Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley secured the point with an 8-6 decision at No. 3.
