The Marquette University men’s tennis team (12-9) wrapped up the regular season with an impressive 4-3 decision at rival DePaul (9-14) Saturday afternoon at the Lakeshore Sport & Fitness Center.

The win allowed the Golden Eagles to finish a perfect 4-0 against BIG EAST Conference opponents. The team has also defeated Creighton, Butler and Xavier in 2015-16.

“I am very proud of a great effort by our entire lineup today,” head coach Steve Rodecap. “We showed a tremendous amount of fight and Mackenzie’s result kept us alive.”

MU trailed 3-1 midway through singles, but used heroics from junior Mackenzie Stearns and freshman Greg Anderson to escape with the victory. Stearns trailed 6-3 in his third-set tiebreaker, but rallied to claim the victory after surviving three match points and a 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 decision by freshman Alvaro Verdu tied the score at 3-3.

Anderson, who joined the team at semester after transferring from TCU, clinched the win with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 spot. The Tucson, Arizona native is now 11-5 in dual action on the year and has clinched multiple wins for the Golden Eagles.

The Blue Demons opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. DePaul swept all three matches, but Marquette was able to make it interesting, falling 7-5 at No. 1 and 6-4 at No. 3.

The Golden Eagles will wait for the announcement of the BIG EAST Conference Tournament seedings early next week before opening play at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C. The eight-team field will begin single-elimination play on April 28, with the champion earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Marquette advanced to the championship match of the 2015 tourney before falling to St. John’s.
