The Marquette University men’s tennis team (14-8) swept Xavier Friday afternoon 4-0 to advance to the semifinals of the 2017 BIG EAST Conference Tournament presented by Jeep in Cayce, S.C.

The Golden Eagles, who have advanced to the championship match each of the past two years, will face No. 1 seed DePaul in the semifinals at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday morning. The Blue Demons defeated MU 4-3 on April 21 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

“I was really happy with the way the guys came out and attacked today,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “We played with a lot of confidence to earn the doubles point and that carried over into singles. Our younger players really stepped up.”

Freshman Luke Smrek and sophomore Greg Anderson made quick work of their opponent at No. 3 doubles and sophomore Alvaro Verdu and senior Nick Dykema cliniched the point with a 6-4 decision at No. 1.

Newcomer Brett Meyers moved MU ahead 2-0 with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6 and senior Kristiyan Trukov quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory of his own at No. 5. Smrek was able to clinch the team win thanks to a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 win over Xavier’s Jeremy Schneider at No. 2.

The Musketeers defeated the Golden Eagles 4-3 earlier this season at home.
