MU Opens BIG EAST Tourney With 4-0 Loss To No. 48 USF
April 29, 2011
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (13-11) opened play at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships Friday morning with a 4-0 loss to No. 48 USF (14-7) in quarterfinal action at the Courtney Tennis Center.
The Bulls are seeded third in the nine-team field, while the Golden Eagles claimed the tourney’s No. 6 position. Notre Dame is hosting both the men’s and women’s events in South Bend, Ind., through the weekend.
USF claimed the valuable doubles point from MU in dramatic fashion, rallying at the No. 3 spot to win two of the three matchups. After Marquette dropped an 8-4 decision at the top spot, sophomore Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and newcomer Dan Mamalat pulled away for an 8-4 victory over USF’s Yannick Yoshizawa and Romain DeRidder at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Otavio Perim and freshman Thibault Troude battled their opposing duo down to the wire before eventually falling 9-8 in the tiebreaker. The MU tandem fought through several break points late in the match and was never able to recover from an early deficit in the tiebreaker.
Marquette claimed the first set in three of the singles matchups, but was unable to collect a point before USF managed to post the 4-0 victory with a trio of wins. In tourney play, action concludes as soon as one team claims a majority of the points. MU’s singles lineup included three freshmen and Logon Collins was the closest to posting a victory, finshing 6-3, 5-4 at No. 5 against USF’s Yannick Yoshizawa.
The Golden Eagles will face No. 7 seed Georgetown at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday morning at Leeper Park Tennis Center in the consolation bracket. Two victories by MU would allow the team to claim fifth place.
