The Marquette University men's tennis team (13-9) opened play at the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Creighton (9-10) Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.

The Golden Eagles, seeded second in the eight-team field, will play either DePaul or Butler in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30. The league champion earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

"I was really happy with the way the guys came out and took command in doubles," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "They continued that into singles and as a result we were able to get off the court and out of the heat relatively quickly."

MU opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. Senior Daniel Fernandez and junior Nick Dykema posted a 6-4 decision at the No. 1 position and the tandem of juniors Kristiyan Trukov and Mackenzie Stearns clinched the point with a 6-3 decision at No. 3.

Marquette didn't let the 90-degree weather slow it down in singles action as the team posted three straight-set victories to get off the court quickly with a team victory. Freshman Alvaro pushed MU ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 2 and Stearns followed at No. 4.

Freshman Greg Anderson, who has clinched a handful of matches for MU this season, notched the deciding victory at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4.

The Golden Eagles defeated both Butler and DePaul during the regular season portion of the dual match campaign.
