Anderson Leads Marquette To BIG EAST Title Match
April 29, 2017
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (15-8) will play in its third-straight BIG EAST Conference Tournament title match thanks to some heroics from sophomore Greg Anderson.
Trailing 4-1 and 5-4 in the third and deciding set at No. 3 singles, Anderson rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 win over DePaul’s Alex Galoustain to allow Marquette to earn a 4-3 win in the semifinal matchup at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
The Golden Eagles, who have falling to St. John’s in each of the last two title matchups, will take on Butler Sunday morning at 8 a.m. CT in Cayce, S.C. for a chance to not only claim the league title, but also earn its automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
“I really can’t say enough about Greg’s effort today,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “He was dead in the water, but when he saw his match would have to be the deciding point, he turned it completely around.”
MU fell 4-3 at home to DePaul on April 21 and on Friday afternoon defeated Xavier in the quarterfinals. The Musketeers had also downed Marquette 4-3 on the road earlier this season.
