Marquette Falls 4-3 To Butler In BIG EAST Title Match
April 30, 2017
The Marquette University men's tennis team (15-9) saw its bid for the program's first BIG EAST Conference title fall just short Sunday morning, falling 4-3 to Butler (18-5) in the championship match at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
The Golden Eagles, who defeated No. 4 seed Xavier and No. 1 seed DePaul en route to the title match, have now claimed the runner-up trophy in each of the last three seasons.
"Our guys put together a tremendous effort all weekend under some difficult circumstances and I am really proud of them," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Butler played a great match and unfortunately for us we came up just short."
MU, which rallied to defeat DePaul 4-3 on Saturday afternoon, fell victim to a Bulldog comeback on Sunday. Marquette led 3-1 after claiming the doubles point and singles wins by senior Kristiyan Trukov and freshman Brett Meyers. The team had claimed the first set in two other matches, but both players would eventually fall in the deciding third sets.
