Marquette Falls 4-0 To St. John's In BIG EAST Title Match
May 1, 2016
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (14-10) saw its bid for a BIG EAST Conference Tournament championship come up just short for the second-straight year, this time falling to St. John’s 4-0 Sunday afternoon in the title match.
The Golden Eagles, seeded second in the eight-team field, also fell to the Red Storm 4-2 in the 2015 event. Sunday’s loss snapped a six-match winning streak for Marquette and concluded its 2016 campaign.
For the first time in the three matches of the tournament, the Golden Eagles dropped the doubles point. St. John’s won at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the point and then won three straight-set singles matches to claim the match. The Golden Eagles were battling in the other singles matches, but were unable to turn the momentum before St. John’s was able to earn the title.
