Hagan, Van Lieshout and Boulieris Advance at Ball State Tennis Tournament
Sept. 15, 2006
Hagan defeated Alex Friesen of Northern Illinois, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round and took down Doug Matthews of Xavier, 6-3, 6-0 in the second. In the B flight, Golden Eagle's freshman, Boulieris was able to come back in three sets to defeat J.T. Torbeck of Xavier, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. In the second round he beat Tetta Oyama of Ball State, 7-6(4), 7-5, 12-10. Van Lieshout was able to come away with wins in both singles and doubles. He defeated Tony Mitson of IPFW, 6-3, 6-2 and partnered up with Greg Sirotek to defeat the duo of Butler's Sam Brown and Xavier's Brian Quinn, 8-4.
"I felt like we played okay in singles today," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Trent, Nick and Pete all won two matches in the main flight. Brett (Binkley) lost a super tie breaker in the second round of the A flight. I thought we had a decent day in singles but we had a few guys that I was a little disappointed in their results."
Brett Binkley and Hagan were able to advance to the quarterfinal round of the flight A doubles by beating Javier Saab and Gregory Sosa of IUPUI, 9-7. Boulieris and Stephen Shao found themselves a spot in the semifinals of flight B by defeating the tandem of Nathan Jones and Aruro Salgado, 8-3 and Adam Ford and Diego Zegarra-Ballon, 8-2.
"In doubles I feel that Trent and Mark didn't play as well as they are capable of," said Rodecap. "We need to continue to get experience playing together and test out different combinations. Overall, it was a pretty productive day and we look forward to the matches tomorrow."
The tournament continues tomorrow, with play getting underway at 9:30 a.m.
