MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up season-opening play at the 36th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sunday afternoon with both singles and doubles action at the Town Club.
Marquette’s Dan Mamalat and Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley claimed the event’s runner-up spot in doubles after dropping their match 8-4 to the doubles champion, Alexander Kostanov and Billy Berth of Wisconsin. The MU tandem finished the weekend 2-1.
Mamalat also earned men’s singles runner-up honors after his win over Northwestern’s Tobias Reitz, 6-1, 6-2. Mamalat went undefeated through three matches in the tournament.
The men’s squad capped the weekend by claiming four singles wins over Northwestern. Along with Mamalat, Octavio Perim, Logon Collins and Drake Kakar each came away victorious against their respective Wildcat opponents. Perim made quick work of Eric Spector, 6-2, 6-0, while Collins and Kakar held on for tie-breaker wins over Alberto Zaretti (6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (7)) and Nikhil Jayashankar ( 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (8)), respectively.
In doubles action, Perim and Jonathan Scherwin got past the Wisconsin duo of Fredrik Ask and Alexander Teppert, 9-8, for the Golden Eagles lone doubles win over the Badgers.
The Marquette women got the final day of competition started in doubles play against Western Michigan. The duo of Gillian Hush and Ana Piemienta was the only MU tandem to come away victorious as they took down Maria Nivia and Sujashvili, 8-4.
