Marquette Opens Play At Purdue Fall Invite

The Marquette University men’s tennis team opened play at the Purdue Fall Invitational Friday with singles and doubles competition in West Lafayette, Ind.

Freshman Luke Smrek, who won his collegiate debut last weekend on the final day of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, opened play at Purdue with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Fabio Perasso of Cardinal Stritch in Flight A action. He was then defeated in the quarterfinals in a straight-set matchup against Purdue.

Fellow freshman Alexander Warstler also claimed a victory in main draw action before falling in the quarterfinals of the Flight C bracket.

Junior Andre Romanello and freshman Brandon Shanklin were downed in their respective opening matches, but both did post wins to advance in the consolation side of the Flight B bracket.

In doubles action, the duo of Smrek/Shanklin claimed a win in Flight A action to advance while the tandem of Romanello/Warstler earned a bye in the Flight B draw. Both teams will return to action on Saturday.
