Golden Eagles Complete Day One At Ball State Invite
Sept. 24, 2010
The Marquette University men’s tennis team continued its 2010-11 campaign Friday afternoon with singles and doubles action at the Ball State Invitational in Muncie, Ind.
The three-day event, hosted by Ball State, includes three flights of doubles competition and one bracket of doubles play. Marquette has a total of seven individuals competing in the tourney.
A pair of Marquette freshmen highlighted the day’s results, claiming a pair of wins in their respective flights. Newcomer Dan Mamalat earned a spot in the flight “A” singles draw quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set wins and will face Ball State’s Zane Smith Saturday for a spot in the semifinals. Classmate Logon Collins also earned two wins and will take on Brian Starr of Xavier in the flight “B” semifinals.
“The conditions were tough out there today,” associate head coach Erick Martinez said. “It was a very, very windy day and it was difficult to get in a rhythm. Dan, Logon, and Manny came out strong and did a good job adjusting to the conditions.” Each of MU’s doubles tandems claimed wins in the respective opening matches.
