Golden Eagles Continue Play At Purdue Invite

The Marquette University men’s tennis team continued play at the 2015 Purdue Fall Invitational on Saturday, with four players seeing action in singles and doubles competition.

Freshman Alvaro Verdu, who advanced in the main draw on Friday after his opponent withdrew, dropped his first actual match to Dayton’s Jordan Benjamin on Saturday. It was a highly-competitive matchup, but in the end Verdu was edged 7-5, 7-6. Sophomore Scott Christian also began the day with main draw action, but fell to Ball State’s Pat Downs 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Andre Romanello and senior Gleb Sklyr were also in action in consolation play.

In doubles action, each of the Marquette tandems representing the program picked up victories in consolation action. The duo of Verdu/Romanello defeated an opponent from Chicago State before falling to Ball State and Christian/Sklyr downed a foe from Toledo, 8-3.

Marquette will conclude action at the tournament on Sunday morning with consolation singles play.
