Gutierrez Crowley, Munoz To Play For Flight D Title At Wildcat Invitational
Oct. 3, 2009
The Marquette University men's tennis team continued play at the 2009 Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Northwestern, with singles action in several draws on Saturday.
Poor weather conditions plagued the event for the second-straight day, pushing back the tournament's schedule. Play will resume with doubles Sunday morning, but only one round will be played, so champions won't be determined in the flights.
The Golden Eagles were represented in the semifinals of each of the four singles flights, but remain alive in only the Flight D draw. Freshman Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and junior Jose Manuel Munoz both advanced to the championship and will battle for team bragging rights on Sunday. Senior Mark Rutherford and sophomore Drake Kakar were tiebreaker victims in their outings and sophomore Jonathan Schwerin was defeated in straight sets in Flight B.
Seniors Dusan Medan and Niko Bouliers, meanwhile, are participating in the D'Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Both players earned opening-round byes in the pre-qualifying draw. Medan defeated Paul Chappell 7-6, 6-3 and will face Dmitry Suslov of Oral Roberts Sunday morning in the fourth round. Boulieris was defeated by Matheus Pereira of Wichita State, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
