The Marquette University men’s tennis team opened play at the 2015 ITA Men’s All-American Championships Saturday morning with singles action in the pre-qualifying draw.

Senior Daniel Fernandez was the lone Golden Eagle to advance, downing William Jou 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday evening. Fernandez, who is trying to earn a spot in the qualifying draw later next week, will face Tyler Pham of UC Irvine at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

It was a tough day for Marquette’s junior class as all three members dropped their respective opening matches. Nick Dykema dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Barnabas Koncz of Oral Roberts and classmate Mackenzie Stearns fell to New Mexico’s Jorge Escutia, 6-2, 6-4. Kristiyan Trukov was also downed in straight sets as Wake Forest’s Anthony Delcore won 6-3, 6-2.

MU’s trio of third-year players will compete in consolation action on Sunday.
