Northwestern Invitational Tournament Central

Freshman Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley claimed the Flight D singles title Sunday afternoon as the Marquette University men's tennis team wrapped up play at the 2009 Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University.

Gutierrez Crowley, who entered the weekend without a victory in the opening two weekends of the season, downed teammate Jose Manuel Munoz 6-2, 6-1 in the title matchup. Gutierrez Crowley concluded the tourney with three wins.

Several miscellaneous singles matches were also played Sunday and MU's victors included sophomore Drake Kakar and freshman Jacob Straus.

After not competing in doubles on Saturday because of delays in the schedule due to poor weather conditions, the Golden Eagles dropped each of their three matchups on Sunday.

Senior Dusan Medan, competing in the pre-qualifying draw at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., defeated Victor Melo of Middle Tennessee State 7-6, 6-3. Medan opened the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dmitry Suslov of Oral Roberts and has now advanced to the qualifying draw. He will return to action Monday morning at 11 a.m.
