Ann Arbor, Mich. - Marquette University men's tennis players Dusan Medan and Jacob Straus advanced in the opening round of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday afternoon and remain alive in their respective bids to earn a spot at the national tournament.
Fresh off an impressive run at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships, Medan made quick work of Western Michigan's Zeyad Montasser with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Straus rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 decision over Notre Dame's Daniel Stahl, who was seeded 16th in the 64-player draw.
"It was important for Dusan to get off the court quickly after his long week at the All-American," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Jacob took advantage of a good opportunity and beat a quality player."
Freshman Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley dropped a tough three-set decision to Cleveland State's Phil Orno, who posted a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory over the Golden Eagle newcomer. Senior Mark Rutherford fell to Marek Michilicka of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, the tandem of Medan/Straus (seeded 11th) earned a bye in the second round while the Rutherford/Gutierrez Crowley duo claimed an 8-3 victory in the opening round.
