The Marquette University men’s tennis team continued play at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday, competing in both singles and doubles action at the University of Michigan.

Freshman Jacob Straus opened his day with a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the main draw over Illinois-Chicago’s Dave Robare. Unfortunately, Straus fell to Wisconsin’s Moritz Baumann 6-4, 6-4 in his second match of the day. Baumann is seeded No. 2 in the 64-player bracket. Senior Dusan Medan dropped his first outing on Saturday, falling to Ohio State’s Devin McCarthy, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

In consolation singles action, senior Mark Rutherford defeated Alexander Pelaez of Illinois State, while freshman Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley was defeated by Notre Dame’s Daniel Stahl.

Marquette’s doubles tandem of Straus/Medan claimed an 8-5 victory over a duo from Illinois State to claim a spot in the round of 16. MU’s team is seeded 11th in the bracket and will continue play Sunday morning for a berth in the quarterfinals. Rutherford and Gutierrez Crowley saw their main draw action come to an end with an 8-6 setback to a squad from DePaul.
