USTA/ITA Midwest - Day 1 Get Acrobat Reader

The Marquette University men’s tennis team opened play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional in East Lansing, Mich., with singles action in the event’s qualifying draw on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles placed a total of five players in the 64-person draw, with two individuals claiming a pair of victories to remain in their respective bids for a main draw spot.

Sophomore Cameron Tehrani posted a pair of straight-set victories on the day and will take on Northwestern’s Fedor Bay on Friday morning for a chance at one of the eight possible spots in the main draw. Freshman Gleb Sklyr also earned a pair of wins, with the first victory of the day marking his debut win at the collegiate level. He will face Will Davis of host Michigan State on Friday.

Sophomore James Stark posted one win before falling, while classmate David Packowitz and freshman Javier Varela Hernani both fell in their respective opening matches.

Already in possession of spots in the main draw are MU’s Dan Mamalat, Vukasin Teofanovic and Logon Collins. The trio will open play on Friday morning. The Golden Eagles will also feature four doubles tandems in the main draw.

The Midwest Regional is one of 12 regional tournaments taking place this weekend. Players will be competing to solidify their spots in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
