The Marquette University men’s tennis team continued play at the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Ohio State, with main draw singles and doubles action on Friday.

Sophomore Alvaro Verdu and freshman Luke Smrek opened play in the main draw by each claiming a tough three-set victory. Verdu dropped his first set to Chad Kissell of Valparaiso, before claiming a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 decision. Smrek downed 12th-seeded Eddy Covalschi of Notre Dame in his lidlifter, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

“I thought both guys played really well and were able to overcome some adversity,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Luke’s win was especially impressive considering his limited experience at this level.” Marquette continued play on Friday with doubles action.

Senior Nick Dykema and freshman Greg Anderson opened the competition for MU on Thursday, competing in the qualifying draw in an effort to earn a spot in the main bracket. Both players claimed victories in their respective opening matches, but saw their tourneys end in the following round.
