MU Caps Tournament With Four Titles At Fall Invitational

Oct. 26, 2008

Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team capped a successful weekend Sunday afternoon at the 2008 MU Fall Invitational, claiming titles in each of the event's four main draws at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles were victorious in two singles main draws, as well as a pair of flights in doubles action. MU was guaranteed the championships in the singles brackets on Saturday, with teammates advancing to the title matchup on both sides of the draw.

"Obviously it was a successful weekend with a lot of strong performances," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "I thought J.T. (Christian) played well the entire tournament and he was able to post a win against a player who had defeated him earlier this year, showing his improvement."

Junior Dusan Medan downed classmate Mark Rutherford 6-3, 7-5 in the final match of Flight "A." Rutherford didn't leave empty handed, winning the Flight "A" doubles title along with Christian. Sophomore Juan Martin-Paredes battled Stephen Shao in the Flight "B" final, but didn't have enough to defeat the senior in a 6-4, 6-4 setback.

Freshman Jonathan Schwerin and junior Niko Boulieris moved past Paredes and newcomer Drake Kakar in the Flight "B" doubles draw, posting an 8-4 win to claim the title.
