Marquette Begins Dual Campaign in Nashville

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's tennis team opens its first competition of the spring season with a dual doubleheader this weekend Jan. 18-19 in Nashville, Tenn., facing Lipscomb and No. 16 Vanderbilt.
The Golden Eagles will play the Bison at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday, before taking on the Commodores at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday. Both matches will be played indoors.
The squad heads into dual play with seven players who saw action during the fall portion of the schedule. MU's team was led in tourney action by newcomers Nick Dykema and Kristiyan Trukov. Other veterans who have contributed this season and in past years include seniors Logon Collins and Dan Mamalat, juniors Cameron Tehrani and Vukasin Teofanovic and sophomore Gleb Sklyr.
Freshman Mackenzie Stearnsjoined the squad for the second semester and is expected to make his Marquette debut during dual play.
Dykema finished the fall campaign in successful fashion with the squad. The Green Bay native started his career by collecting three flight titles for singles and doubles play and paced the roster with 11 singles wins.
Mamalat enters his last season of play as a Golden Eagle after a fall campaign of straight-set wins and competing in singles and doubles. He qualified for the 2013 ITA All-American Championship and was seeded 17th in the pre-qualifying draw in the fall.
The No. 16 ranked Commodores are entering the season coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in 2013, their highest finish at the NCAA's in nine seasons. Five members of the squad were also named in the singles and doubles rankings. The duo of Ryan Lipman and junior Gonzales Austin enter the competition ranked No. 2 after finishing 10-2, winning the SEC Fall Classic and making it to the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in the fall. Austin also opens at the No. 9 singles.
After the competitions this weekend, Marquette hosts its first home match of the season at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The squad will face IUPUI on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
