Marquette Opens Dual Campaign At No. 33 Minnesota

Jan. 19, 2011

In its first dual match of the season, the Marquette men's tennis team travels to Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Doubles action begins at 6:30 p.m. CT at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The Golden Gophers, ranked No. 33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association entering dual action, finished last season 14-11 overall after falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"Minnesota always provides a great atmosphere for college tennis because they have a very good fan base," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "It will be the first dual match of the year for both of us, so it will be a great way to measure where we are at.

"They (Minnesota) return five of six starters from last year's team, which lost in the round of 32 against Texas last season," Rodecap said. "The guys have been training really hard and look forward to getting it started this weekend against a very good team. "

Golden Gopher seniors Sebastian Gallego (48) and Tobias Wernet (71) were both ranked by the ITA in September 2010, along with the doubles pair of Gallego and junior Phillip Arndt (28).

Marquette faced fall play after losing four players from last season's squad. Freshman Logon Collins led the Golden Eagles with 11 wins in singles play, while classmate Dan Mamalat and senior Jose Manuel Munoz each added seven wins.

The Golden Eagles finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 16-6 record, led by then-seniors Niko Boulieris, Dusan Medan and Mark Rutherford, who each collected at least 16 overall singles victories.

In the last contest between the two in 2009, MU fell 7-0 at Minnesota.
