Marquette Opens Dual Campaign At Minnesota

The Marquette University men’s tennis team will open the dual portion of its schedule when it travels to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on Minnesota on Jan. 20, with first service slated for 5 p.m. CT.

The Golden Eagles have won two of their last three dual openers, with the lone defeat coming on the road against Minnesota during the 2014-15 campaign.

“Our guys have been working hard and we are ready to get the dual season started,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Minnesota is a quality team and it’s going to be a challenge, but I know our guys are ready to get back on the court and compete.”

Marquette Falls 6-1 At No. 49 Minnesota
The Marquette University men's tennis team (0-1) opened the 2015 dual match campaign with a 6-1 loss at No. 49 Minnesota (1-0) Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Baseline Tennis Center.

For the second consecutive year, Marquette is coming off a season which resulted in a trip to the championship match of the BIG EAST Tournament. In both seasons, the Golden Eagles conference and NCAA automatic bid hopes were ended by St. John’s.

Through the squad’s fall tournament slate, MU was paced by Mackenzie Stearns and Brandon Shanklin in singles action. Stearns finished the fall with a 5-4 singles record, while Shanklin finished with a 6-6 mark for MU.

The most successful duo in doubles action was that of Scott Christian and Andre Romanello, who finished the fall with a 3-0 record while playing together.

Minnesota features two players ranked inside the top-50 of the Oracle/ITA Division I Men’s National Rankings. Felix Corwin and Matic Spec are ranked as the No. 48 doubles team, while Spec is also ranked No. 42 in singles rankings.



After the road dual with the Gophers, Marquette will begin a four-match homestand beginning on Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. Central time against IUPUI at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
