Men's Tennis Opens Dual Season Saturday Morning

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's tennis squad opens the dual season on Saturday morning, Jan. 23, against Western Illinois. Doubles play will begin at 10 a.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium in Milwaukee, Wis.
Head coach Steve Rodecap returns five student-athletes from a squad that finished the 2008-09 season with a 17-9 record, including 11-1 at home. All five returning Golden Eagles tallied double-digit singles wins last season, led by senior Dusan Medan's 31-9 overall singles record.
Seniors Mark Rutherford and Niko Boulieris tallied 26 and 25 singles wins, respectively, while sophomore Jonathan Schwerin added 22. The duo of Rutherford and Schwerin led the team with an 18-9 doubles record last season. The Golden Eagles are joined by four newcomers in Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley, Jose Manuel Munoz, Otavio Perim and Jacob Straus.
The Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks lost their top two singles players, and are led by sophomore Mandela Shepard, who tallied a 12-8 overall singles record last season. No returning doubles pair for Western Illinois tallied more than two wins in 2008-09. Reigning Summit League Coach of the Year Michael Hunt returns five players from a squad which finished 10-16 last season.
Marquette tallied a 7-0 win against the Fighting Leathernecks a year ago in Milwaukee.
