Marquette Hosts IUPUI Saturday In Home Opener
Jan. 23, 2014
The Marquette University men's tennis team (1-1) returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 25 when the squad hosts IUPUI at Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 1 p.m. CT.
IUPUI (1-2) enters the competition after coming off two tight match losses against SIU- Edwardsville and St. Louis last weekend. Both of its defeats were only by one point. Junior Alex Toliver remains undefeated at the No. 1 singles position, which came after winning two-tiebreaker sets.
“We look forward to being able to kick off our home portion of the season against IUPUI at Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Saturday,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “IUPUI is traditionally a very scrappy team that competes with a lot of intensity so it should be a good test for us. It’s important for us as a team to do a good job in our building and protect our home court not only in this match, but for the entire season.”
Marquette opens home play after defeating Lipscomb and losing to No. 16 Vanderbilt on the road. Senior Dan Mamalat and freshman Kristiyan Trukov led the squad and picked up straight-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 singles spots, respectively, against Lipscomb. Junior Vukasin Teofanovic almost picked up his first victory against a nationally ranked opponent before falling at the No. 1 singles position against Vanderbilt.
This will be the second time Marquette and IUPUI face off at Helfaer. Last year, the Golden Eagles defeated the Jaguars 6-1.
