Jan. 28, 2010
Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis team will host three matches this weekend at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium in Milwaukee, Wis. The Golden Eagles will take on Chicago State and IUPUI at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Jan. 30, and will begin doubles play against UIC at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31.
Head coach Steve Rodecap's squad is one contest into an 11-match homestand. The Golden Eagles opened the dual match season with a 7-0 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 23. Marquette did not drop a set in singles action, led by senior Mark Rutherford at the No. 1 position.
Under first-year coach Jack Barton, Chicago State (0-0) opens its season at Marquette before beginning league play. Last season, the Cougars finished 4-13 overall (0-5 MAC) ending their season in the first round of the MAC Championships. Marquette tallied a dominating 7-0 win over CSU last January.
IUPUI (0-3) opened the season with three losses, two by 7-0 scores to Louisville and Notre Dame. Against Morehead State, freshman Joel Modesitt was the lone singles player to score a point for the Jaguars at the No. 6 spot. Last season, Marquette played IUPUI on the first day of its dual season and swept the Jaguars without dropping a set in singles play.
UIC (1-2) will conclude at Marquette in the final of three matches on the road in as many days. The Flames travel to Chicago and Illinois State before action Sunday morning in Milwaukee. The squad opened the season with two road losses at DePaul and Northwestern before earning the first win at Northern Illinois.
