Luke Smrek Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

Sophomore Luke Smrek of the Marquette University men’s tennis team has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Picking up a quintet of victories over the weekend, including three straight-set victories at No. 2 singles, Smrek led the Golden Eagles to a perfect 3-0 week. Competing at the No. 3 position in doubles, Smrek and Scott Christian opened the weekend clinching the crucial doubles point against ETSU. Later in the match, with the score tied at three, the sophomore sealed the Golden Eagles first victory this spring, defeating Juan Lugo, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
Facing UIC on Sunday, Smrek once again clinched the match for the Golden Eagles, defeating Johan Hedstrom, 6-1, 6-3.
Marquette returns to action Friday night at 6 p.m. when the team hosts Green Bay at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
