Golden Eagles Return Home For Pair Of Matches Sunday

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis team will host Eastern Illinois and South Dakota State in dual play on Sunday, Feb. 22. Doubles action against EIU will begin at 10 a.m., while play against SDSU will continue at 4 p.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

Marquette (5-3 overall) opened the season with four-straight wins, and after setbacks against Wisconsin and Minnesota, tallied a win against Texas-San Antonio. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium this season. Senior Stephen Shao and junior Dusan Medan lead the squad in dual singles wins, each with a 5-3 record, and Medan leads all Golden Eagles with 16 overall wins.

In doubles action, the pair of junior Mark Rutherford and freshman Jonathan Schwerin boasts a 4-3 dual record (7-7 overall), while the Medan-Shao duo are undefeated in dual play (2-0 dual, 4-2 overall).

The Panthers of Eastern Illinois (4-2) are in the midst of a three-match win streak. Head coach John Blackburn's team will take on Northern Illinois and South Dakota State prior to facing off against Marquette at 10 a.m. on Sunday. After falling in his first match of the season, Panthers senior Vuk Milicevic (5-1) has won five in a row in singles play. Senior Jordan Nestrud and freshman Drew Grimaldi each boast singles records of 4-2 apiece. EIU has two doubles pairs above .500, with the Miliceric-Nestrud duo tallying a 2-0 dual record, along with freshman Matyas Hilgert and junior Jeff Rutherford. The Golden Eagles captured a 7-0 win against the Panthers last season in Milwaukee.

South Dakota State (0-0) travels to Milwaukee for their first weekend of play after its scheduled first match of the season was cancelled due to weather. The Jackrabbits will take on Green Bay and Eastern Illinois on Saturday before the match against the Golden Eagles on Sunday at 4 p.m. SDSU finished last season 6-14 overall, and with a sixth place finish out of seven teams in the Summit League. The squad's top returner is junior Corey Paluch, who tallied a 10-9 singles record during the 2007-08 campaign.
