Golden Eagles Return Home For Pair Of Weekend Matches

Feb. 23, 2011

The Marquette University men's tennis team returns to action this weekend when it hosts Bradley on Saturday, Feb 26 at 4 p.m. and Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles (5-5) are coming off a five-match road swing, where they faced four nationally-ranked opponents in a row. After dropping the first four matches of the road trip, Marquette ended the losing skid by defeating Furman, 4-3, on Feb. 20.

In the victory over Furman, Marquette was forced to capture four points in singles play after dropping the opening doubles point. Freshman Logon Collins locked up that essential fourth point by beating Furman's Tyler Droll 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 at the No. 4 position.

Bradley (6-2) enters the weekend with a five-match winning streak. The Braves have defeated their last three opponents in 7-0 shutouts. Putting the Braves in position to capture the critical doubles point are sophomore Eric Nguyen and freshman Ashton Kalhorn who are 3-1 at No. 1 doubles this season. Bradley will play host to Butler on Friday, Feb. 25 before traveling to Milwaukee.

Eastern Illinois (1-5) has lost its last four matches. The Panthers dropped a 5-2 decision in their last match on Feb. 20 at Valparaiso. Sophomore Michael Sperry picked up his first victory of the season at No. 1 singles against the Crusaders.

Marquette will be looking forward to its return to the friendly confines of Helfaer Tennis Stadium, as the Golden Eagles are a perfect 4-0 in dual matches at home this season.
