Golden Eagles Head To East Coast For Spring Break Trip

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis team will take to the road for a four-match trip over Spring break.

The team will travel to No. 66 Harvard and Brown on Sunday, March 8 and Monday, March 9, and then take on Hampton and Old Dominion on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13, respectively.

Marquette opened the season with four-consecutive sweeps and has won four of its last five. Junior Dusan Medan leads the teams in overall and dual season single wins with 19 and eight, respectively. The doubles team of junior Mark Rutherford and freshman Jonathan Schwerin has tallied the most overall and dual wins, recording 7-7 and 4-3 records, respectively.

Head coach Steve Rodecap's squad will travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Harvard (4-3) at 1 p.m. at the Beren Tennis Center. Harvard opened the season ranked No. 48, and has fallen nearly 20 spots to season-lowest No. 66 the week of March 3 after losing to then-No. 19 Michigan and then-unranked Northwestern in the two most recent matches. No. 65 junior Chris Clayton entered the spring season No. 1 in both the singles and doubles rankings for the Northeast Region. Alexei Chijoff-Evans (3-3), Sasha Ermakov (3-2), and Alistair Felton (3-2) lead the Crimson in spring singles wins. The pairs of Felton-Hayes (2-1) and Chijoff-Evans-Ermakov (2-1) lead Harvard in doubles dual play.

Brown (10-4) opened the season with a loss to Boston College before winning seven in a row. Head coach Jay Harris returns seven players, including three seniors. The Bears finished in second place in the Ivy League last season, with an even 14-14 overall record and 5-2 record in conference play.

Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Hampton was selected to finish first in the MEAC Northern Division as defending regular-season champions. Junior Gabriel Groh earned MEAC Player of the Week honors at the beginning of this season.

 

 

Old Dominion (13-7, 2-0 CAA) has won five of its last six matches in spring play after opening the season with a 3-0 record. The Monarchs tallied wins against then-No. 55 St. Mary's, 5-2, and then-No. 33 VCU, 4-3. Sophomore Matt Fawcett leads ODU in single spring wins, posting an unblemished 18-0 record. The doubles pairs of sophomore Tobias Fanselow-senior Aleksandr Seleznev (13-3) and junior Yakov Diskin-sophomore Alex Funkhouser have tallied double-digits dual wins. Fanselow is ranked No. 106 by the ITA, and the doubles pair of Fanselow-Seleznev is ranked No. 53 nationally.
