Marquette Heads West To Continue Road Swing

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis team will play four matches in the next week over spring break, including action at UC Irvine on Sunday, March 14 and against Marist on Tuesday, March 16. Later in the week, the Golden Eagles will face off against Loyola Marymount and Nevada.
Marquette (11-3) will aim for its first road win of the season, coming into the weekend on a three-match losing streak following an 11-0 homestand. Led by seniors Niko Boulieris and Dusan Medan, with 10 dual singles wins apiece, the Golden Eagles are in the midst of a 10-match away series.
No. 48 UC Irvine (9-4) has won two matches in a row entering Sunday play against USC Upstate and Marquette. Three Anteaters earned the Big West Athlete of the Week honor in the first four weeks of the season, including senior Zac Tsai, sophomore Fabian Matthews and senior Shimpei Suzuki.
Classmates Steven Henderson and Matthews are reigning Big West first team singles selections last season, while junior Khunpol Issara was named to the second team and junior Stephen Stege earned honorable mention. Irvine also earned a number of doubles honors last season in the Big West, including the first team pair of Issara/Gould and second team selections Tsai/Jon Kazarian.
Marist, of the MAAC, enters play in California 2-3 with one postponement and a tournament to open the season. The Red Foxes have won two of the last three, including a 7-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and a 5-2 victory against Stony Brook. Freshman Joris Van Eck and sophomore Matt Himmelsbach were named MAAC Men's Tennis Players of the Week on Feb. 9 and March 2, respectively. Marist claimed the MAAC Championship last season for the second consecutive year, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Returning senior Loic Sessagesimi was the 2009 Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The Golden Eagles will take on Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles on Friday, March 19 and play against Nevada in San Diego the next day.
