Golden Eagles Return Home To Host Valparaiso & Northern Illinois

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis squad will host Valparaiso and Northern Illinois in two weekend matches, Sat., March 21 and Sun., March 22, respectively.

Doubles play against each team will begin at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 1 p.m. each day. The Golden Eagles own a 7-1 overall record at home this season.

The Golden Eagles (9-6) have tallied two winning runs this season, opening with four consecutive 7-0 victories, and in late February and early March, three straight 7-0 wins. On a road trip over spring break, Marquette lost three of four, falling at No. 66 Harvard, Brown, and Old Dominion. Freshman Drake Kakar has won four singles matches in his last five outings, and tallied a 5-1 record in singles play in his inaugural collegiate season. Junior Niko Boulieris (10-4) leads the Golden Eagles in total dual singles wins.

Valparaiso (3-4) travels to Milwaukee after winning three of its last six. Freshman Adam Whitmer earned Horizon League Player of the Week recognition on March 11 after tallying six wins, the first such honor for a Crusader since Valparaiso joined the Horizon League. Of head coach Jim Daugherty's seven athletes, only two are upperclassmen in senior Alex Lau and junior Tom Litscher. Marquette won its last match against Valparaiso, 7-0, during the 2006-07 campaign.

Northern Illinois (4-4) is 2-4 on the road this season, including losses to then-No. 31 Wisconsin, 5-2, and then-No. 59 Iowa, 6-1. First-year coach Pawel Gajdzik's team opened the season with three losses, rebounded to win four in a row, and fell at Illinois most recently. Freshman Jurica Grubisic (6-1) is in the midst of a five-match winning streak, while sophomore Matt Hansen (5-2) and freshman Pawel Poziomski (4-1) each boast four match winning streaks. In doubles play, the pair of juniors Javier Bernabe and Shaun Stewart lead the team with a 3-0 dual record, all at the No. 3 position.

 

 

During the 2006-07 season, the Golden Eagles tallied a convincing 6-1 victory over the Huskies.

Marquette head coach Steve Rodecap was the head coach at Northern Illinois for four seasons before arriving at MU.
