Marquette Caps Homestand With Pair Of Non-League Matches

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis team will host Green Bay and Wright State on Wed., March 25 and Sat., March 28, respectively.

Doubles play against in-state rival Green Bay will begin at 3 p.m. while the Golden Eagles will take on Wright State at 1 p.m. All home matches are played at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles (11-6) have won two in a row, and six of their last nine. Led by junior Niko Boulieris (20-9 overall, 12-4 dual) in singles play and the pair of junior Mark Rutherford and freshman Jonathan Schwerin (11-8 overall, 8-4 dual) on the doubles side, Marquette has posted a 9-1 record at home this season. Rutherford boasts a four-match win streak in singles play entering Wednesday's match.

After beginning the spring season with six-consecutive losses, the Phoenix (5-6) have rebounded to win five in a row. including four 7-0 victories. The squad is led by seniors Matt Keesey and Eric Plaushines, and includes one junior, two sophomores and three freshmen. Junior Matt Clegg led the team in singles wins last season, posting a 14-9 record (10-8 from the No. 3 position). First-year Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas is a Marquette product, graduating in 2002 after four years on the tennis squad and a role as captain his senior year. Marquette tallied a 6-1 victory against the Phoenix a season ago.

Wright State (2-10) travels to Milwaukee with no road wins this season. Senior Nick Camilleri (14-5) is the only Raider with an above .500 singles record, but has yet to compete in the spring. The doubles pair of sophomore Jan Alafriz and freshman Mihkel Kruusmagi is 6-5 from the No. 1 doubles position in dual matches. The Raiders see limited production from the No. 1 and 4 singles positions, and have only tallied two total spring wins from those slots. The Golden Eagles handed Wright State a 6-1 loss last season in Milwaukee.
