The Marquette University men's tennis team will conclude the home portion of its dual-match campaign on Sunday, April 8, when it welcomes Northern Illinois to Helfaer Tennis Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.

Seniors Drake Kakar and Jonathan Schwerin will be competing in their respective final home matches for the Golden Eagles. Schwerin has earned double-digit singles victories in each four years of his career, while Kakar sits just three career-victories shy of eclipsing the 50-win mark. Both players joined the roster in 2008-09 and have been valuable contributors in both singles and doubles competition.

“Senior Day is always a tough day as a coach because you are witnessing the final home stand of the kids who have put a lot of work in for the program,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “We will be losing two outstanding young men who will be tremendously missed in our program. Drake and Jon have poured their heart and soul into this program for four years and have represented our team very well on and off the court.”

Marquette (8-12) enters this weekend having dropped three of its last four matches, with two of those defeats coming in the form of tight, 4-3, decisions. Freshman Cameron Tehrani has settled into his singles role this season, posting a 10-4 mark at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions.

The Golden Eagles have had success this season at home, boasting a 6-2 record in the friendly confines of the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

NIU (17-5) topped St. Louis, 5-2, and Bradley, 4-3, last weekend to extend its winning streak to seven matches. NIU has winning records at every doubles and singles position, including a 17-3 mark at No. 3 singles. Don Amir is 18-3 in singles play and 9-0 at the No. 2 position this season.

“NIU is one of the most improved teams that we will face this year,” Rodecap said. “They have had some really good results and we will need to be prepared for a tough match.”

Rodecap served as head coach of the Huskies for four seasons before arriving at Marquette.

Live stats will be made available for the match against NIU on GoMarquette.com.
