Men's Tennis Opens Homestand With Doubleheader Saturday
April 4, 2013
The Marquette University men's tennis team will begin a four-match homestand this weekend when it welcomes Cleveland State and Chicago State to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6.
First serve against Cleveland State is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. Following the match against the Vikings, the Golden Eagles will face Chicago State in an evening matchup slated to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
“We were able to watch Cleveland State while we were in Florida and it’s going to be a tough matchup,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Their lineup is solid from top to bottom. We will have to be ready for Chicago St., especially with it being the second match of the day.”
Marquette (9-11) is coming off its final road trip of the season, splitting decisions against UT Arlington and SMU. The Golden Eagles handled UT Arlington 5-2, but fell to SMU 6-1.
Sophomore Vukasin Teofanovic picked up two singles victories in both of the contests. The Novi Sad, Serbia, native grinded-out a pair of three-set matches, defeating UT-Arlington's Soren Goritzka 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 and surpassing SMU's Pablo Perez-Esnaola 6-3, 5-7, 10-2. Both victories came at the No. 2 singles slot.
Cleveland State (6-15) had found success as of late, winning three-straight matches. The Vikings will be given all they can handle, however, as the Golden Eagles have been strong at home boasting a 7-3 mark in dual matches this season at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Chicago State (1-17) enters this weekend having only won one of its 18 matches this season. The Cougars only victory came back on Feb. 15, when they blanked Robert Morris (Pa.), 6-0.
This will be Marquette's final homestand of the season before BIG EAST Conference Championship play beginning on April 18, in South Bend, Ind. MU will honor its lone senior, Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley, on April 14, when the Golden Eagles take on Wright State.
