Marquette Wraps Up 2008-09 Regular Season In Florida

Milwaukee - The Marquette men's tennis team takes to the road for matches against UCF and USF before BIG EAST Conference Championship play next week.

Doubles action against UCF begins Friday, April 10 at 1 p.m. in Orlando, Fla. Play in Tampa, Fla. at USF starts at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 13.

The Golden Eagles (15-6) have won six outings in a row and seven of their last eight. Each of the decisions has been by a perfect 7-0 final score. Junior Mark Rutherford carries an eight-match winning streak into the weekend, and senior Stephen Shao, juniors Niko Boulieris and Dusan Medan, and freshman Jonathan Schwerin boast six-match win streaks. Boulieris is the team leader in dual wins with 16. The duo of Rutherford-Schwerin is 12-4 in dual action, and has tallied eight consecutive wins.

UCF (10-9 overall) returns six letterwinners from last year's 12-9 squad. Junior Johan Belgart is 7-1 from the No. 4 singles spot, and is 11-8 in singles dual action on the season. Sophomore Blaze Schwartz leads the Knights in total dual singles wins, boasting a 14-5 record. The doubles pair of Belgart-Schwartz carries a three match win streak into play Friday and has only lost one point this season.

The No. 44 USF Bulls (10-8) have fallen from a season-high national ranking of No. 28 the week of Jan. 29. The BIG EAST Championship runner-ups a season ago, the Bulls earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, falling in the first round. On a squad that has just two upperclassmen on its roster with three sophomores and four freshmen, USF remains deep. Sophomore Lucas Jovita (22-10 overall, 7-6 dual) entered the season ranked No. 27 in the nation and is currently ranked No. 75. Freshman Wael Kilani (24-7, 13-5) is ranked No. 97 nationally in singles action by ITA. On the doubles side, the No. 44 pair of junior Thomas Estrada and Jovita has won four in a row to add to their 7-4 dual record, all from the No. 1 singles position.



Following the final two regular season matches, the Golden Eagles will compete in the BIG EAST Conference Championship April 16-19 in Tampa, Fla.
