Marquette Hosts Butler Saturday On Senior Day
April 13, 2016
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (10-9) will take on Butler (9-9) in its final home match on Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m. CT at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Marquette downed Creighton Friday, April 1 and Xavier Sunday, April 3 each with scores of 6-1, sustaining its 7-0 home record for the dual season.
Against Xavier, freshman Greg Anderson moved the Golden Eagles ahead 2-0 with a straight-set win at the No. 5 singles position. Alvaro Verdu clinched the team win with a singles victory over Xavier’s Jeremy Schneider at No. 2.
Butler comes into its first matchup in BIG EAST Conference play against Marquette Saturday. The Bulldogs recently fell to Indiana 7-0 on April 10, their first loss in five matches.
“It’s always an emotional time when you honor seniors prior to their final home match,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Daniel is a very talented player and has been a critical member of our lineup the past two seasons.
“Gleb has been a great teammate and is a tremendous story when you consider how much he has developed not only as a player, but as a person, since he first arrived on campus,” Rodecap added.
Fernandez has played two seasons with the Golden Eagles after transferring from New Mexico State, and was an All-BIG EAST Conference selection in 2014-15. He also claimed the team’s most valuable player award that same year. Fernandez won the singles title at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic earlier this season.
Sklyr is the lone four-year senior on the roster. His collegiate debut took place at the 2012 Milwaukee Tennis Classic and he has seen action at a number of singles and doubles positions for the Golden Eagles during his tenure. Sklyr owns over 60 combined singles and doubles victories during his career at Marquette.
Following Saturday’s action, MU will take on DePaul for its final regular season matchup in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, April 23 at 2:15 p.m. CT.
