MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University men's tennis will conclude its regular season this weekend as it welcomes Wright State on Friday, April 17 at 6 p.m. and fellow BIG EAST member, DePaul on Sunday at 2 p.m. Central time at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
MU (10-9) is currently 7-2 on the home front, most recently finishing last weekend 1-1 against Youngstown State and Cleveland State. Sophomore Kristiyan Trukov won all his singles and doubles matches, extending his singles victories total to 19, the most on the squad. Trokov and Andre Romanello remain 4-0 at the No. 3 doubles, compiling a 8-2 record in their last ten matches.
Against YSU, the Golden Eagles swept in doubles action and won all but one of their singles matches for the 6-1 victory. Competition against Cleveland State was tight, but MU fell 4-3, snapping its four-match winning streak.
Wright State's (10-17) last opponent was against No. 11 Ohio State, in which the Raiders fell 4-0. Larui Makikalli boasts the best singles record on the squad, holding a 6-3 mark in the last ten, while having an overall 6-1 record in doubles with Andrew Connolly, going undefeated in all spots except one loss at No. 1 doubles.
DePaul (11-9) takes on St. John's before heading to Helfaer. The Blue Demons are currently 3-0 in BIG EAST conference action, led by Alex Galoustian in singles. Galoustian, despite losing his last match, remains 16-2, including 7-0 at the No. 5 singles. On the doubles side, Sten Leusink and Kyle Johnson hold a four-match win streak, going 8-2 in their last ten and 2-0 in conference action.
Marquette's last matchup against DePaul was in the semifinals of last year's BIG EAST Conference Championship, where MU fell 4-3. Cameron Tehrani picked up a singles win, while partnering with Nick Dykema for a doubles victory.
Sunday's matchup against the Blue Demons will be the last time seniors Vukasin Teofanovic and Tehrani play on the Helfaer courts. Prior to the match, the duo will be recognized for its impressive careers on the Golden Eagles squad. Together, the senior duo have combined for over 200 victories on the singles and doubles end.
"Senior days are very bitter sweet," said head coach Steve Rodecap. "Because on one hand you are celebrating a career of hard work and there is certainly a lot of emotion involved in that, but you are also seeing these two young men play their last match for Marquette. These guys have put a lot into this program that we are very grateful for, and I am sure that their Marquette experience have helped prepare for the next phase of their lives."
Teofanovic currently owns over 122 victories on his career. Last year, Teofanovic and former teammate Dan Mamalat, etched a 30-21 record, the third-most wins in doubles history for the program.
Tehrani has accumulated 116 wins so far, including 60 wins on the singles ends. During his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Tehrani finished second and tied for first on the squad in singles victories, earning over 20 in both seasons.
"Cam and Vuk have been pillars in our lineup since arriving on campus and we will miss having them around," said Rodecap. "I know that they are looking forward to this weekend and I am very fortunate to have been able to coach them the past four years."
Aside from senior day recognition, all who attend the match Sunday will receive free Jimmy John's. Students will be put in a drawing for a $100 gift card to the Spirit Shop.
Following the matches, MU will prepare for the BIG EAST Championship April 24-26 in Indianapolis.
