Marquette Earns No. 6 Seed In BIG EAST Championship
April 16, 2012
The Marquette University men’s tennis team (10-12) has earned the No. 6 seed in the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Championship (April 19-22) and will face No. 3 seed St. John’s (16-7) Friday, April 20 in Tampa, Fla.
STJ is ranked 50th in the nation in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings and will be Marquette’s seventh nationally ranked opponent in 2011-12. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT April 20 at USF’s Andros Dorm Courts.
The MU/STJ winner advances to play the No. 2 Louisville/No. 7 Georgetown winner at 11 a.m. on April 21, with the loser moving into the consolation bracket. Each program is guaranteed at least two matches at the tournament.
“St. John’s is a very talented team that has had a great year and has one of the best players in the league,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “They have a very deep team and compete well at all nine spots, so our guys will need to be ready to play good tennis on Friday.
“We have played in two, eight-team fields this season trying to prepare for what we will have to face in this tournament,” Rodecap said. “Tampa does provide a great venue for the Big East Tournament, but also presents some challenges for the teams who have not had to play in the heat consistently."
The Golden Eagles are 7-9 overall in the BIG EAST tourney since joining the league in 2005-06 and finished in sixth place at the 2011 event.
“I feel that our guys have put in the time off the court to give ourselves the best chance to be successful in tough conditions,” Rodecap added.
The first team to collect four points advances in the bracket, with doubles action played prior to singles. The league champion earns the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
