Golden Eagles Earn No. 4 Seed In BIG EAST Championship
April 19, 2010
The Marquette University men's tennis team (16-5) has earned the No. 4 seed in the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championship and will face No. 5 seed DePaul at Noon on Friday, April 23.
Notre Dame is serving as host for this year's event, which begins with opening-round play on Thursday morning. No. 8 seed Connecticut faces No. 9 seed Villanova at 9 a.m. on April 22 for the right to take on No. 1 seed Louisville. The Marquette/DePaul winner would advance to play Louisville/Connecticut/Villanova.
"Obviously we are coming off of a tough loss to DePaul," Rodecap said. "Friday will be a new match, however, and I think our guys are excited about the opportunity the rematch presents the team."
Marquette concluded its regular season with a 4-3 loss to DePaul on Saturday afternoon in Chicago. MU claimed the doubles point, but dropped four of the six singles contests in the narrow defeat. The Blue Demons have downed the Golden Eagles in the BIG EAST tourney in each of the past two years, including a 4-3 setback in the same pairing of the 2009 championship.
Since MU joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06, the league tournament has been hosted by USF in Tampa, Fla.
The tournament champion earns the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
