The Marquette University men’s tennis team (15-8) has earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Conference Tournament and will face No. 7 seed Creighton at noon CT on Friday, April 25.

The eight-team event will be played at the US National Tennis Center, home of the US Open, April 24-27 in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament champion earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

“We are excited to be heading to the BIG EAST Tournament and it will be nice for the guys to be able to compete at one of the world’s most renowned venues,” head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Conference tournaments typically produce some of the most exciting tennis because there is so much at stake and teams play with a greater sense of urgency.

“We certainly have a lot of respect for how hard Creighton competed against us this past weekend, and know that we will need another good performance to advance,” Rodecap added.

The Golden Eagles are currently in possession of a five-match winning streak and are 4-0 in 2013-14 against opponents from the BIG EAST Conference. St. John’s claimed the tourney’s top seed and is ranked 72nd in the country. MU defeated Creighton 6-1 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Friday, April 18. The squad dropped the doubles point before sweeping all six singles matchups.

Marquette is led by senior all-conference candidate Dan Mamalat, who is 20-9 in singles on the year and 16-6 in dual competition. He is currently tied with former player Dusan Medan (2007-10) for the school’s all-time singles win total (88). Junior Vukasin Teofanovic has seen a majority of his action at No. 2 singles and is 14-8 in duals and 19-11 overall in singles competition.

A pair of newcomers has also made a big impact on the team’s success this season. Freshman Nick Dykema tops the roster with a 25-10 record and classmate Kristiyan Trukov is 20-7 overall. Both players have also seen extensive action in the doubles lineup.
